The celebration of Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people from a plot to destroy and kill all the Jews in a single day—described in the book of Esther. • When Queen Esther’s cousin Mordecai learns of the Persian official Haman’s scheme, he shares the plot with her. He challenges her to reveal her Jewish identity to the king and plead for the lives of her people. In words recorded in Esther 4:13–14, Mordecai says: “For if you remain silent at this time . . . deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish.
