The synthesis reaction formally requires two electrons, so two equivalents of lithium are required. The product of the reaction is a new organolithium reagent and lithium bromide (LiBr). The preparation reactions are normally performed in an ether solvent. Organolithium reagents are slightly more nucleophilic than Grignard reagents, but both reagents are often used interchangeably.
