The violoncello is an Italian instrument that was born in the early 17th century in Italy. Initially, it was a rather large instrument, although even then, it was sometimes played by violinists held on the shoulder. In the second half of the 18th century, a number of much smaller varieties of this instrument were invented. Today, we call it the violoncello da spalla, based on some historical documents using this term. However, composers—who frequently were also violin and/or viola players—never called it violoncello da spalla. They called it simply violoncello.
