Womans cat euthanized at SCRAPS just hours after going missing

Taija Nelms' cat Duey got out of the house, and when she went to pick him up at SCRAPS a few hours later, she found that Duey was dead. • It's heart wrenching. I'm very, very broken. He was literally the last thing I had in my godfather. And to know that now, every single time I go to bed, he's not there, Nelms said. • Nelms has known her cat for 15 years, and on Friday, Duey's life was cut short. • She said Duey got out of her house, and after hours of looking for him, she found out through a social media post that he'd been taken to SCRAPS. But by the time she got there, it was too late. • So I zoomed over to SCRAPS, got there, and by the time I got there, you know, I finally, like, showed pictures of my cat, confirmed the picture that they had, they told me, 'I'm sorry, but we euthanized them,' Nelms said. • SCRAPS has been under scrutiny in recent months surrounding the no-kill shelter's euthanasia practices. • The county claims euthanasia was the only option left for Duey, as his health had worsened once he arrived at SCRAPS. • It was deemed unlicensed or unidentified. And then the animal, because it was suffering, our licensed veterinarian and our SCRAPS director made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the cat and its suffering, said Patrick Bell with Spokane County. • Taija says she's worried that the decision to put her cat down was made so quickly. • According to Bell, SCRAPS will hold microchipped cats for up to five days, and unchipped cats don't have a hold period.
