TRILOGIES Series Opens April 19 at Film Forum • https://filmforum.org/film/marcel-pag... • Marcel Pagnol’s MARSEILLE TRILOGY • MARIUS • (1931, Alexander Korda) Pagnol’s entry into cinema was as producer and screenwriter on the film of his hit play, the action taking place mainly in the Marseilles waterfront’s Bar de la Marine, owned by the crabby but lovable César (Raimu) whose son Marius (Pierre Fesnay) finds the lure of the sea stronger than his love for Fanny (Orane Demazis, then the off-screen Mme. Pagnol). The wonderfully performed characters and the comic set pieces immediately establish the warm atmosphere of the trilogy. DCP. Approx. 130 min. • FANNY • (1932, Marc Allégret) Picking up exactly where Marius ends, Fanny retains the first part’s vitality, humor and depth of character. The performances (by Raimu, Demazis, Charpin, et. Al) are a joy to behold and Pagnol’s dialogue is of supreme comic skill. DCP. Approx. 125 min. • CÉSAR • (1936, Marcel Pagnol) The continuing saga of Fanny, Marius, César and Panisse, taking place twenty years after the events of Marius. Pagnol opened up his final part of the trilogy with increased location shooting and some quick cutting, but the principal pleasure remains his delicious dialogue and Raimu’s all-enveloping performance in the title role. With the original ensemble intact: Orane Demazis, Charpin, et al. DCP. Approx. 168 min.
