To do this, it must first radiate from within you as the leader. The passion to persevere has to reside in the depths of your core. It's not something you can purchase or pretend. It must be your genuine truth. And if it is, the power of perseverance will slowly saturate your team through osmosis of the mind. Becoming the cornerstone of your team's character and culture. When that happens, the invisible chains holding you back from reaching your biggest goals and greatest achievements will be broken. • The definition of perseverance is to persist in anything undertaken; to maintain a purpose in spite of difficulties, obstacles and discouragement; and to continue steadfastly despite delay in achieving success. • This means that whatever you start, you do not stop until you are finished. • That you never forget why you're doing what you're doing. • That the passion to succeed remains strong regardless of the struggles and setbacks you encounter along the way. Because the fire inside you burns brighter than the fire around you. • That you continue to press forward, relentlessly and consistently no matter how far away success may live. You are willing to start from the beginning one thousand times over if that's what it takes. • Like the story of Colonel Sanders' who was rejected by over one thousand restaurants before finally finding a buyer upon visiting the one thousand and ninth. His chicken of course eventually became world famous. • It's hard to beat a person that never gives up. Babe Ruth once said. How true that was for Colonel Sanders'. Had he given up after being rejected the one thousand and eighth, he would have never found success. But he persevered. • When you think about any championship person, team or organization, they all have one consistent characteristic, and that characteristic is to persevere. • Like Muhammad Ali, who when asked how he persevered through so many years of rigorous training, he replied, I hated every minute of training, but I said to myself, 'Don't quit, suffer now, and live the rest of your life as a champion. • Not unlike the 2,000 year old bible verse that reads Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything . Over time, perseverance builds the competitive muscle you and your team will need to be champions. • Like it did for Sara Blakely, who's Dad taught her that at a young age by routinely asking her, What have you failed at this week? Teaching her setbacks were okay, that they were a part of the process of building perseverance. When Sara grew up she founded the company Spanx, where she taught her team the character of perseverance as her Dad taught her. Eventually becoming the youngest self-made female billionaire in the United States. • Or how about the 2011 women's World Cup? Turned out to be much more than a soccer game for Japan's team. Four months prior, Japan was rocked by a devastating earthquake and tsunami that killed nearly 16,000 people. In the midst of the devastation, Japan's women persevered with heavy hearts through the tournament, upsetting team after team on their quest to the finals where they faced the highly favored and superior United States team. Like the others, the US fell in defeat. They could not withstand the strength of Japan's perseverance and grit. And the women of Japan lifted the spirits of the people of their country when they needed it the most. • So the question is, how do you build a culture of perseverance? It starts with you, the leader. • You must have passion behind what you're doing. If you are passionate about it, your team will be passionate about it as well. Think of someone you love. Now imagine your mission is to save their life. If you fail, they die. You would go to the ends of the earth to save them and never even consider the idea of quitting. That's the type of passion you need. • You must have a strategy and a plan. Your plan can change along the way, but you must always have a plan. Because without a plan, you and your team will feel lost and hopeless. Which will weaken your drive to preserve. But as long as you have a plan, you have hope. And hope fuels perseverance. • You must carry a master's mindset . The difference between a master and everyone else is, the master expects difficulties. They expect the plan to need to change. They expect it to take longer than they think. They know in advance they will need to overcome a constant string of adversities in order to reach success. • ..(the rest of the script was truncated) • Next video:    • JOURNEYS - Inspiring Leadership Video
