Bharat Ek Khoj—The Discovery of India • A Production of Doordarshan, the Government of India’s Public Service Broadcaster • Episode 1: Bharat Mata Ki Jai (भारत माता की जय) • With Ravi Jhankal, Vijay Kashyap, Ram Moorti • आज़ादी की लड़ाईके ज़माने में पंडित नेहरू को काफी समय जेल में बिताना पड़ा। जब भी वे जेल से बाहर रहे, उन्होंने राजनीतिक जनजागरण के सिलसिले में भारत भर की सघन यात्राएं कीं। उनकी हर यात्रा जैसे एक खोज थी। भारत की विविधता भरी संस्कृति और यहां के लोगों ने नेहरू जी के मन पर गहरा असर डाला। • चुनावी यात्राओं के दौरान भारत माता की जय के नारे सुनते हुए उनके मन में यह सवाल जागा कि जिस भारत माता की जय के नारे लोग लगा रहे हैं वे उनका अर्थ भी जानते हैं या नहीं? इसके लिए उन्होंने गरीब किसानों-मज़दूरों कोयह अहसास दिलाया कि जिस भारत माता की वे जय चाहते हैं वह महज़ भारत की धरती ही नहीं यहां के लोग भी हैं यानी हम और आप। नेहरू जी को भारत का पेचीदा और भेद भरा वजूद हमेशा ही आकर्षित करता रहा। उन्होंने इसके मर्म को समझने की और सामने लाने की हर चंद कोशिश की। अपने भारत भ्रमण के क्रम में नेहरू जी ने महसूस किया कि उनके भीतर पढ़ा हुआ इतिहास जीवित होने लगा है और भारत की यात्राएं उन्हें बीते हुए कल को समझने में मदद कर रही हैं। • हिन्दुस्तान की धरती का पूरा फैलाव और उसके बदलते रंग-रूप, नेहरू जी के मन पर ज्यों-ज्यों छाने लगे, त्यों-त्यों ये चुनौती भी घनीभूत होती गई कि भारत की आत्मा को समझा जाए। इसके लिए उन्होंने मिथकों-पुराणों-पुराकथाओं और स्मृतियों को लिखित इतिहास के साथ मिलाकर हिन्दुस्तान की कहानी बुनना शुरू की। तथ्यों के साथ स्मृतियों और किस्से कहानियों ने ताना-बाना बुनने में उनकी मदद की। पांच-छ: हज़ार साल पुरानी हिन्दुस्तानी तहज़ीब के कायम रहने और जारी रहने की वजह क्या है? यह सवाल उन्हें हिन्दुस्तानी मन:पटल पर अंकित दार्शनिक प्रभावों की ओर उन्मुख करता है। हिन्दुस्तानी मनीषियों ने सृष्टिï के आरंभ और उसके रहस्यों की व्याख्या के जो प्रयास किए उनका निचोड़ ऋग्वेद के दशम् मंडल में उद्धृत नासदीय सूक्त में सामने आता है। इस एपसोड में हिन्दुस्तानी संस्कृति की आधारभूत छवियों के इंद्रधनुषी रंगों के अलावा नासदीय सूक्त का हिन्दी गीत रूप भी विस्तार से दिखाया गया है - सृ़ष्टिï से पहले सत् नहीं था, असत् भी नहीं... जो कि इस धारावाहिक का शीर्षक गीत भी है। • The scene opens with a panoramic visual of India and its colourful landscape. Occasionally, as Nehru reached a gathering, a great roar of welcome would greet him-‘Bharat Mata—ki Jai’! He would ask the crowd unexpectedly what they meant by that cry, I who was this ‘Bharat Mata’, whose victory they wanted? His question would surprise them, and then, not knowing what to answer, they would look at each other. He persisted in his questioning. At last a vigorous jat, wedded to the soil from immemorial generations, said that it was the Dharti (the good earth) of India that they meant. What earth was it? Their particular village patch, or all the patches in the district or province, or in the whole of India? Nehru would then endeavour to explain that India was all that they had thought, and much more. The mountains, the rivers, the forests, and the broad fields which gave them food, but what counted ultimately was the people like them who were spread out all over this vast land. Bharat Mata was essentially these millions of people, and victory to her meant victory to these people! • Travelling by train, the landscape and the landmarks flash past his eyes. He wanders over to the Himalayas and sees the mighty rivers - the remote Brahmaputra, the Yamuna, and the Ganga - that flow from this great mountain barrier into the plains of India, from their source to the sea. India unfolds with its waterfalls, rivulets and seas, with her richness of life and its renunciation, of growth and decay, of birth and death. • He visits old monuments Ajanta, Ellora and the Elephanta Caves. He sees the lovely buildings in Agra and Delhi where every stone tells its story of India’s past. At Saranath, near Banaras, he could almost hear the Buddha’s first sermon. The inscriptions on the Ashoka Pillars of stone make their inscriptions speak to him. At Fatehpur—Sikri, he almost hears Akbar converse with the learned of all faiths. Slowly, the long panorama of India’s history unfolds itself before him with its ups and downs, its triumphs and tragedies.
