I always ask my patients, How much better do you feel and how do your symptoms improve when you have completely emptied your bowels for a good amount of time? • For most methane SIBO patients, constipation is a common issue. They experience extreme bloating and visible distention, and their bowel movements are slow and sluggish. But here's the good news: if we can break that cycle and improve their bowel movements, making them more complete and daily, amazing things happen (for some). • When those bowels start moving better and you see improvements in bloating and distention, it's a cause for celebration. Many methane SIBO patients experience a reduction in these stubborn symptoms. • Sometimes, it's tough to shift that bloating and distention, but if you see improvements when you focus on getting your bowels moving regularly and completely, that's great news. However, I have to be honest—it's not a straightforward fix for everyone. • If you're not seeing improvements in bloating and distention despite emptying your bowels completely, it's time to consider looking at your transit time. How long does it take for food to pass from your mouth to the toilet bowl? • You might be surprised to learn that even if you're having a bowel movement every day, it doesn't mean things are moving efficiently. Some patients with watery bowel movements multiple times a day can still take up to a week for food to pass through their digestive tract. No wonder they're bloated and distended! • Ideally, all that food should pass through within 24 to 36 hours, 48 hours at the most. So, while we should be flexible and open-minded, it's important to have a goal of speeding up transit time if you're regularly emptying your bowels but not seeing improvements in bloating and distention. • I hope this information helps you understand the importance of bowel movements and their impact on methane SIBO symptoms.
