During his childhood, and up to his young adult life, Constantine the Great was a political hostage under Diocletian as a means to ensure the loyalty of his father Constantius. Galerius, an influential and ambitious man in the court, was interested in getting rid of Constantine at any cost as he saw the young man's talents and feared for his own position. Galerius conducted many campaigns in Persia and the Danube, during which Constantine served under him. Years after Constantine's death, legends produced tell stories of Constantine being trapped by Galerius in a doomed mission to fight a lion, but the young prince emerged victorious.
