Air raid sirens over Guernsey with some images and views of Guernsey. It is not intended to cause upset to anyone, just to try to give a feeling of historical ambiance to the Guernsey Liberation Day celebrations. • Until recently the air raid sirens were tested two or three times a year to check that they could be heard by everyone island wide. They were also used for the start and finish of a minute silence, such as Rememberance Sunday and Liberation Day. • Cable Wireless Guernsey who maintain and run them now say they are too expensive to maintain and in the event of a war or nuclear disaster from the Flammanville Nuclear Power Station nearby, they will text everyone. How many parts that wear out can be in an air raid siren that don't get used much!!! • Firstly, not everyone has a mobile. • Secondly, not everyone has it turned on all the time. • Thirdly, when will we know that the minute silence has started and finished? • AIR RAID SIREN SOUND EFFECTS COURTESY OF GUITARGUY1985 FREESOUND.ORG • http://www.freesound.org/people/guita... • http://www.freesound.org/people/guita...
