In India/ in valley of Jharkhand • 80 percent of Ranchi's urban area is supplied with drinking water from Getalsud Dam. This quenches the thirst of about eight lakh people. Problems increase when the water level of the dam decreases during summers. If the dam continues to fill with silt like this, then every year there will be a crisis regarding drinking water supply. At present, Getalsud Dam is filled with 14 feet of silt. This has reduced the water storage capacity. By removing the silt from the dam, drinking water can be supplied to the city for 840 days. • Due to the silt, the water level of the dam soon reaches the danger mark during the rainy season. In such a situation, the dam gate is opened and water is released. Last year also, the gates of Getalsud and Gonda Dam were opened several times to release water. If we increase the water storage capacity by removing the silt, then there will be no shortage of water in the capital Ranchi for two years. According to the departmental engineers, one inch of water can supply drinking water to the city for five days when Getalsud dam is full. One inch of water can supply water for two days when the water level is low. • Silt has accumulated up to 14 feet • Along with other dams of the state, silt is also filling up in Getalsud and Gonda dams of the capital. In the last eight years, the water storage capacity of Getalsud dam has decreased by 14 feet. On the other hand, the water storage capacity of Gonda dam has decreased by five feet. The main reason for this is the dirty water and garbage coming from various drains. Getalsud (Rukka), Gonda (Kanke) and Hatia dams are the basis of Ranchi Urban Water Supply Scheme. Before the year 2015, water up to the level of 1900 feet of Getalsud dam was used for drinking water. After May 2015, water up to 1910 feet was used for drinking water. After April 2019, water from 1914 feet is being used for drinking water. • The raw water below this is very contaminated. It is not possible to clean it for drinking water. The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation is immediately providing drinking water to the people of Ranchi as per the 1914 feet standard. On the other hand, earlier, water was taken from Gonda Dam for water supply up to the water level of the reservoir of 2107 feet. Currently, due to siltation, water can be taken for water supply only up to 2112 feet. • Silt is filling due to rotting of water hyacinth and discharge of dirty water • Silt is filling in the dams due to rotting of water hyacinth and discharge of dirty water. In Getalsud Dam, dirty water from various localities of the city like Vidyapati Nagar, Hindpidhi, Kusai Bridge, Muktidham Namkum drains, Harmu River and Jumaar River is reaching Getalsud Dam via Swarnarekha River. Due to this, the quality of water of Getalsud reservoir is getting affected. At the same time, due to dense settlement in the water storage area of Gonda Dam, the catchment area of the dam is getting completely affected. Pandra River and Karma River have now turned into a big drain.
