Traveling on the metro is the best way to get around in New York City. It is the most economical way to travel and the fastest. If you want to get a real sense of New York, the subway is a great way to go. Millions of people use it every day and, it runs 24 hours a day. You will find it crowded at 2 a.m. You will even find it crowded at 2 a.m. You might also encounter random street performers/buskers, and observe real New Yorkers in their element. You need a MetroCard to experience all this. Getting the Unlimited Pass is the best option if you are staying in New York for a few days. The same card can also be used to ride on the bus. Don't be intimidated by the subway! It is very safe to ride on it even at 1 a.m. Just ask a local passenger or at the ticketing counter for help. I had trouble not knowing which direction I was supposed to go on the first day.
