The First Battle of the Aisne (September 13–28, 1914) was a pivotal moment in World War I, marking the beginning of trench warfare that would dominate the Western Front. Following the First Battle of the Marne, where the German advance through France, part of the Schlieffen Plan, was stopped by French and British forces (September 6–12), the Germans, led by General Helmuth von Moltke, retreated to the Aisne River. Here, they established strong defensive positions, taking advantage of the natural high ridges and plateaus overlooking the river. • The Allied forces, including the French Fifth and Sixth Armies and the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), led by General Joseph Joffre and Field Marshal Sir John French, pursued the retreating Germans, hoping to secure a decisive victory and break through the German lines. On September 13, they reached the Aisne, but the fierce German resistance and fortified positions turned the battle into a long stalemate, setting the stage for the grueling trench warfare that followed. • Subscribe to this channel : / @historycapsules • Support the channel : https://buymeacoffee.com/historycapsules
