Explore the elements of an altarpiece and discover the history behind these devotional objects in a visit to the National Gallery, London and Florence, Italy. And we go behind the scenes in our conservation studio to show you how altarpieces were made by craftspeople and artists. • 'Devotion by Design' (6 July -2 October 2011) was part of a series of summer exhibitions drawn from the National Gallery's permanent collection.
