The present lecture series was given by NCTS Scholar Prof. Caucher Birkar (University of Cambridge, UK) during his visit to NCTS Math Division Taipei in September 2013. • There are in total 6 lectures, providing an elegant yet essential introduction to birational geometry in positive characteristic: • Lecture 1 Introduction: differences with characteristic zero • Lecture 2 Surfaces: minimal model program and classification • Lecture 3 Base point freeness: Keel's technique and applications to cone theorem. • Lecture 4 Singularities: F-singularities and relation with char zero. • Lecture 5 Numerical properties: case of nef adjoint divisors. • Lecture 6 Flips and minimal model program: case of 3-folds. • • Each of the lectures is now available on Youtube. • • National Center of Theoretical Sciences (NCTS) Mathematics Division in Taipei was established in 2004, aspiring to serve theoretical scientists, train talented students and young researchers as well, in the field of theoretical mathematics. The center also aims to promote interdisciplinary research among theoretical sciences and their applications. Every year, a considerable number of scholars visit NCTS, work with local scientists, and give lecutres. • Please refer to http://www.math.ntu.edu.tw/~ctsdev/ for more information.
