Example • Show that in an intrinsic semiconductor, the Fermi levels lies midway between the conduction and valence bands. • Solution • Let at any temperature TK, nc be number of electrons in the conduction band and nv be number of electrons in the valence band, • So, number of electrons in both bands, N = nc + nv. • Let us assume that • 1) The width of energy band are small as compared to forbidden energy gap between them. • 2) All levels in a band have the same energy because band widths are small. • 3) In valence band, energy of all levels is zero. • 4) Eg is the energy of all the levels in the conduction band. • Where f(Eg) is the probability of an electron having energy Eg. • In intrinsic semiconductor, the Fermi level lies midway between the conduction and valence band. • #learningscience • #semiconductor • #intrinsicsemiconductor • #Fermilevel
