Please support me on Patreon: / persianlearning • Donation to support my channel: https://paypal.me/persianlearning • Poem: 5 Quatrains from Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat رباعیات • Poet: Omar Khayyam عمر خیّام • Read by Araz Salehi • Translation: The first two Quatrains are unknown literal translations, the other 3 Quatrains are translated by Edward FitzGerald 1859 • Omar Khayyam (/kaɪˈjɑːm/; Persian: عمر خیّام [oˈmæɾ xæjˈjɒːm]; 18 May 1048 – 4 December 1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet.[3][4][5][6] He was born in Nishabur, in northeastern Iran, and spent most of his life near the court of the Karakhanid and Seljuq rulers in the period which witnessed the First Crusade. • As a mathematician, he is most notable for his work on the classification and solution of cubic equations, where he provided geometric solutions by the intersection of conics.[7] Khayyam also contributed to the understanding of the parallel axiom.[8]:284 As an astronomer, he designed the Jalali calendar, a solar calendar with a very precise 33-year intercalation cycle.[9][10]:659 • There is a tradition of attributing poetry to Omar Khayyam, written in the form of quatrains (rubāʿiyāt رباعیات). This poetry became widely known to the English-reading world in a translation by Edward FitzGerald (Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, 1859), which enjoyed great success in the Orientalism of the fin de siècle. • Poem: • Quatrain 1 • ای دوست بیا تا غم فردا نخوریم • این یکدم عمر را غنیمت شمریم • فردا که ازین دیر فنا درگذریم • با هفت هزار سالگان سر بسریم • Quatrain 2 • قومی متفکرند اندر ره دین • قومی به گمان فتاده در راه یقین • می‌ترسم از آن که بانگ آید روزی • کای بیخبران راه نه آنست و نه این • Quatrain 3 • ابر آمد و باز بر سر سبزه گریست • بی بادهٔ گلرنگ نمی‌باید زیست • این سبزه که امروز تماشاگه ماست • تا سبزهٔ خاک ما تماشاگه کیست • Quatrain 4 • تا کی غم آن خورم که دارم یا نه • وین عمر به خوشدلی گذارم یا نه • پرکن قدح باده که معلومم نیست • کاین دم که فرو برم برآرم یا نه • Quatrain 5 • ای کاش که جای آرمیدن بودی • یا این ره دور را رسیدن بودی • کاش از پی صد هزار سال از دل خاک • چون سبزه امید بر دمیدن بودی • As many asked me to make some video on Farsi literature, to let them practice standard formal Persian, and to get a bit acquainted with Persian literature, I have decided to make hopefully 1 video each Friday on literature. Each time a piece of poetry is chosen and read for you, I will add an English translation (please note that sometimes there is no recognized poetic translation available, so that I have to translate it on my own which will not be a real literary translation, as this episode one). I will not explain all words and phrases like my other series, but at the end of the clip, you will see some new words that you can take note and learn. The main purpose of this series is at first to let you enjoy our literature, secondly to listen to some standard formal Farsi and learn a bit of vocabulary. I hope you enjoy it.
