The Real-Lile of James Arness Matt Dillon Gunsmoke TV. • James Arness was an American actor best known for his role as Marshal Matt Dillon in the popular television series Gunsmoke, which aired from 1955 to 1975. Arness began his acting career in the 1940s and appeared in several films before landing the role that would make him a household name. He played Marshal Dillon for 20 seasons and was one of the longest-serving actors to portray a single character in a primetime drama series. Arness was also a decorated World War II veteran, having served in the United States Army and been wounded in action during the Battle of Anzio.
