Azerbaijan's time in the Soviet Union left a deep mark on its culture, infrastructure and social organization. Under Soviet rule, Azerbaijan experienced rapid industrialization, especially in the energy sector, given its rich oil and gas subsoil. • Education and health also greatly improved, as the Soviet government promoted literacy programs and developed a strong educational system, raising the standard of living compared to the past. • However, the Soviet era also brought difficulties and limitations. This mix of Soviet and Azerbaijani influences creates a unique society that balances modernization with tradition, while still seeking its own path in the international arena. • Azerbaijan has a close and special relationship with the Turkic world, based on deep historical, cultural and linguistic ties. The most prominent connection is with Turkey, with whom it shares cultural and ethnic ties reflected in the well-known motto “one nation, two states.” • Both countries have collaborated closely in economics, education, culture and especially defense, creating a strong alliance that has strengthened their ties both in times of peace and in situations of conflict, such as the recent conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. • In addition to Turkey, Azerbaijan is an active member of the Turkic Council, an international organization that promotes cooperation between Turkic-speaking countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. • Azerbaijan seeks to strengthen economic and cultural relations with the Turkic world, while promoting Turkic unity and identity in the international arena.
