If your pet is sick, take them to see your local veterinarian for the care they need** (Disclaimer) • Hi Everyone! • My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today and I talking about the most common intestinal parasite in dogs. There are a large number of intestinal parasites in dogs that include but are not limited to roundworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and hookworms. • Dogs get worms from their environment, because they are exploring their world with their nose and mouth. The most common worm that I see as a veterinarian is roundworms. Roundworms are nematodes that usual infect a dog by fecal to oral spread. • The worms move to the dogs intestines were they grow and produce more worms and eggs. The roundworm eggs are spread by the fecal matter or poop of the dog. Other dogs are infected by the contaminated poop. • Dogs with roundworm infections may show no signs of disease or they may have severe GI symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. Always consult your vet if you are worried that your dog may have a parasite or worm. Regular fecal exams are important to diagnose an intestinal worm like the roundworm. • Your veterinarian may complete the fecal exam or fecal float in house, or some send the fecal sample off to a reference lab. The vet will look at the fecal sample under a microscope, and they are looking for roundworm eggs. If they see roundworm eggs, the veterinarian can prescribe a dewormer. There are a few different dewormers that your vet may prescribed, but one of the most common ones is pyrantel. • Disclaimer: This video does not replace veterinary care.
