Squat Chinese Toilets Can I Drink the Water

I am back with some more advice on what to expect when you travel to China. Today I will show you a couple of #squat #toilet scenarios you may come across. And I will answer the all important question: Is the tap #water safe to drink? • OK let's start with the water before we get to the dirty stuff. Can you d#rink water right from the tap? HELL NO! Not even the Chinese drink it. But once it has boiled for 2-3 minutes it is perfectly safe to drink, tourist included. I never had a problem. It did not taste terrible but perhaps had a hint of a metallic taste. I did stick to bottled water most of the time. Restaurants will only serve you boiled hot water for safety. • By the way the modern toilet and hot water tank shots were taken in a newer public building very far from the tourist zone in Beijing when I joined a friend for her dance class in a community center. • So how many times did I squat in my week there? Only 2 times...and never in an open concept one. Do not worry, in most tourist areas you will find western style toilets. • But I did want to show you the old style public bathrooms often found in the hutongs vs a modern squat toilet setting. The modern is basically identical to western except for the toilet itself.
