Filmed on March 5, 2018 • A Stack Train of the Future! • When I first saw one of these back in 2016, I was told it was called a “Flat Rack” container. Here’s one with a load! (3:10).These are used for loads that must be lowered in from the top or from the side and can’t be loaded from the end, where the doors are on a standard container. This is the intermodal industry modernizing and expanding beyond only loads that go in a boxcar to things like the bulkhead flatcar. • This entire train seems modern and even futuristic, let alone when I filmed this in 2018. First, it had a large number of those tanker containers, far more than I’ve ever seen on one train. I’ve also never seen other containers stacked on top of them, so it’s possible that wasn’t allowed until recently. • There was also a two-tone yellow and gray container which really catches your attention. It makes me wonder why we don’t see more effort put into advertising on intermodal containers. • Finally, just after 1:47 is a container with a blue tarp over the top. This container has no roof and acts as a gondola. • I don’t know the names for most of these containers, but if this was a regular freight instead of an intermodal train, you would see boxcars, tanker cars, a gondola, and a bulkhead flatcar on the train. We still have a long way to go, but this is exciting!
