A r t w o r k s: Gustave Doré. • Paul Gustave Doré (January 6, 1832 -- January 23, 1883) was a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving and steel engraving. • Born in Strasbourg in 1832, he became interested very early on in drawing and created his very first lithographs at the age of 12. • His prolific career as book illustrator began around 1850 when he did the engravings for Gargantua by François Rabelais (1853). This work was followed by his celebrated illustrations of Fairy Tales by Charles Perrault (1862), Don Quixote by Cervantes (1863), The Divine Comedy by Dante (1861-1868), etc. He's equally renowned for his operatic works imprinted with Romanticism.
