Introducing my new book, Legends of Maine. Legends of Maine is an anthology of stories and articles, all pre 1900, that deal with things like sea serpents, Windigo, aka Bigfoot and other legendary creatures and beings from Maine's storied past. • Legends of Maine has been in development for quite some time, and really, there is so much more to tell that it has become difficult to assemble any complete compendium of what Maine is all about. From her early days as a vast tract of dark woods, rolling hills, rocky seashore and beyond, the human presence has provided a mystery shrouded in part entertainment, part superstition, part intrigue and a whole lot of leg pulling. • This compilation of tales and notes explores and shares some of my favorite stories from the past and hopefully shares some insight into the complexity of the lore that makes us what we are today. What we become as a community is dependent upon our beliefs, and as those beliefs change over the course of time, as we grow from our infancy into our twilight years. • There are many stories that haven't a lick of truth, and yet they compell us to still believe. Take Colonel Bucks tombstone, a storied tourist spot along route one in Bucksport, Maine. An eerie image of a leg appears in the granite of this monument, and the story claims it was put there as a reminder of the curse a witch that Buck had executed by burning at the stake had placed upon him and his heirs. • There is not an ounce of truth in the story aside from the fact that the monument does indeed have a aberration in the shape of a leg. Buck was never a judge, so he could never have issued an order for execution, and furthermore, there is no record of there being any executions in Maine at any time in her past. But the rumor does make for some good story material. • • However, folklore does more than entertain. It can educate us as well by providing a window in which to peer into the past through. We can, in light of today's knowledge, look back at yesterday's songs and catch a glimpse of what it must have been like to live in yesterday's world of fears, tears and suspicious superstitions. • • In this volume I have shared some stories that were written purely as entertainment, some that were written as current fact when they were written, and some that are legends based upon an aboriginal belief system that provided no real answers to the happenings of the time. • • Two of the main writers I share works of in this volume of Maine folklore are Samuel Drake Adams and Charles Montgomery Skinner. These men wrote of their collected stories in the latter 1800s, and provide a different aspect of looking at the past than we do today. Their collected tales were written simply as repeated to them by the people of the era without delving into the why and wherefore of the tale. They simply shared what they heard at face value, as I ask you to do with this book. • • Another writer I share in this book is George Arthur Cleveland, and I find his tale of the colony of frog people hidden in one of Maine's back country lakes fascinating. The image in my mind as I read the story equals the imagination of the best of today's Hollywood storytellers. • • Charles Asbury Stephens was another prolific Maine writer of the 1800s, and I have included a couple of his tales of what the Indian of the day called Pomoola, and many white men called the Injun devil. Reading them today, some century and a half after the stories had been written, I can picture what we call Bigfoot today roaming around Maine's deep forests and streams. • • There are other tales to tell in this volume as well, from the infamous sea serpent legends from the early 1800s to Andre Thevet's writing of the famed Gougou in the 1500s. • • Enjoy the tales as written without trying to analyze them with today's knowledge, and maybe you will find a legend that you too can pass on down to your own generations of listeners. legends of Maine will be available through Amazon and ordered through your local bookstore in four to eight weeks, but for now, you can purchase this book through ny book site by going to: http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/dlsoucy or check out my Amazon page at: http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B0056SXP3K. • While you are at Lulu, check out Gian J. Quasar's book, Recasting Bigfoot. It is an interesting volume presenting a unique perspective in the search for Bigfoot.
