I made a playlist: • • Aleph-Bet Video • • Some notes on the meaning of some of the more obscure verses: • Verse 83, For I am become like a bottle in the smoke. • —In order for us to understand more clearly what David meant here, we must first examine the surrouding verses [81-85]: My soul fainteth for Thy salvation: but I hope in Thy Word. Mine eyes fail for Thy Word, saying, When wilt Thou comfort me? For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget Thy statutes. How many are the days of thy servant? when wilt Thou execute judgment on them that persecute me? The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after Thy Law... • David is clearly expressing here that he is hungering and thirsting after righteousness, in this passage (actually the whole Psalm)! The Hebrew word for bottle in verse 83 is H4997 in the Strong's Concordance noywd {node}. It does not mean a glass bottle, as we might assume in our modern way of thinking. No; it refers to a skin or leather bag, which would be used to contain fluids -- for example, a wine bottle. • In the Gesenius's Lexicon we find another clue as what David meant -- for I am become like a bottle in the smoke -- wine [leather (or skin)] bottles were sometimes hung up in smoke, to procure a certain flavour to the grape juice (or wine ). It may have also been related to methods of preservation or various ancient arts of cooking. To hang a wine bottle up in the smoke would ruin the bottle. • I thus imagine that I am become like a bottle in the smoke is like saying I have become all shrivelled up [figuratively speaking] due to those that persecute me: because I love the Law of Thy mouth. • And that's my sincere interpretation. • • Verse 70, Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in Thy Law. • —Just watch this video [especially from 07:27]: • • The Strong's Concordance (HD) • Psalm 119:70 - GREASE • Strong's H2459 - cheleb • In the Bible, cheleb appears 92 times. It was translated 79 times as fat, 4 times as fatness, 5 times as best, twice as finest, one time as marrow, and one time as grease [in Psalm 119:70]. • The word primarily means the fat (either of humans or of animals). It also means the choicest or best part [of products of the land]. The root word means to be fat. • • Psalm 119:70 - FAT • Strong's H2954 - taphash • Taphash is only found once in Scripture. The word here translated fat more literally means to be thick (in a figurative sense). Metaphorically it means to be inert or to be stupid. Other synonyms include gross or insensitive. • In modern English, You're thick implies great stupidity.
