The Gion Matsuri in Motegi, Japan is held on the last weekend of July every summer. Hundreds of people join the festival and parade Dashi (山車) and Mikoshi (神輿) around Motegi Town. It is a lively two day event. Saturday ends with a Fireworks display from the top of Mount Shiroyama. Sunday is capped with the Mikoshi returning the diety to it's home shrine. • Motegi Town (茂木町) is a small town in Tochigi Prefecture (栃木県) but it is full of traditional Japanese character. Only a short trip from Utsunomiya (宇都宮) and nestled in the mountains Motegi still has the old Japanese charm. The Gion Festival is the top event of the year for most people here. The local diety is paraded around town in a Mikoshi (神輿) and followed by 8 Dashi (山車) as well as all the town elders and a lot of young volunteers. The festival gets underway around noon on Saturday culminating in a splendid fireworks show. By evening the main street is closed off to automobiles and only foot traffic is allowed. The street is packed with venders selling all sorts of Japanese treats. I highly recommend the cream filled pastries and the chocolate coated bananas. • Sunday picks up around noon and the Dashi and Mikoshi parade around town more or less non stop until 9pm when the Mikoshi returns to Yakumo-shrine (八雲神社). I hope that you can enjoy a little taste of the Japanese countryside. • If you are interested in participating please feel free to check out the Motegi Town webpage. https://www.town.motegi.tochigi.jp
