Solving the Haberdasher’s Problem Puzzle • (a 10 Second Solution) • The Haberdasher’s Problem is as follows: • A haberdasher has just one piece of cloth, which is either: • an equilateral triangle that needs to be made into a square • or – in a more recent variant of the puzzle – • a square that needs to be made into an equilateral triangle • You can cut the cloth but the finished square or equilateral triangle needs to retain all the material from (i.e., have the same area as) the original shape. • It can be done in as few as 4 pieces, and it was a big discovery over a hundred years ago but more recently it is used as the basis of many a puzzle where you need to make both shapes out of smaller pieces, and that’s where this video starts from. • #HaberdashersProblem, #VisualPuzzle #10SecondSolution
