Amtrak Train 20 Racing NS Lite Engines Northbound at Manassas Grade Crossing

Amtrak Train 20, the northbound Crescent, found itself in a little race with an NS lite engine move dispatched from Manassas yard. Because of the 50mph track speed the Amtrak trains speed advantage was neutralized and the lite engines, high hood Southern GP38 #5051 and low hood GP38 #5565, were able to keep pace with the 10-car passenger train. Here is a longer video taken as the two train run side-by-side past a grade crossing just south of the Manassas Park VRE station. Both trains were whistling, but unfortunately you can only hear the horn from the lite engines. They were not equipped with a K5LA so in addition to the race it was also a battle of the horns. Past the crossing the lite engines grew their lead, but ultimately had to stop to allow our train to cross ahead of them at EDSALL interlocking.
