Ah, relationships, a never ending story. What is truly remarkable about A DOLL’S HOUSE is the fact that the „awakening“ the protagonist Nora - that is her becoming aware of the humiliating part she’s playing in the relationship with her husband Thorvald - was penned down by Henrik Ibsen as early as 1879. The play ends with an act of emancipation of her part that has outraged men and thrilled women - and a German agent felt it necessary to have an alternative ending written for his audience, in which Nora rather broke down than free herself.
