The question asked in this discourse was: If somebody wants to study the Vedas, where in their religious journey would the Vedas come into play. • Om Swami gives his perspective by saying, one shouldn't start with the Vedas. Originally the Vedas had hundred thousand verses divided across four: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and the Atharvaveda. Roughly only five thousand verses pertain to sadhana and almost all of them in the Atharvaveda. Fifteen thousand verses are Gyana Kandh and they talk about creation, the universe, human and other lives, etc. The remaining eighty thousand verses are hymns/prayers. • Whether someone studies fifteen thousand verses of the Vedas or seven hundred verses of the Bhagavad Gita - the essence is the same. Out of the seven hundred verses, Sri Krishna spoke around five hundred and sixty-three verses. The Bhagavad Gita is the concentrated pill. From a religious perspective, one doesn't have to consult a lot of other scriptures when we have the Bhagavad Gita, spoken directly by the Lord himself. But from an intellectual perspective, if one wants to study the Vedas, they surely can. • If someone wants to study the Vedas, they should study the Upanishads first. The essence of Vedas can be found in the Upanishads, which is focused on the philosophy of life. Followed by the Upanishads, one can read the Puranas. The Puranas will help when you start to study the Vedas. Studying the Vedas is for someone who has plenty of time, a great deal of willingness, some degree of devotion, and a lot of self-discipline. Today, the first challenge for anybody studying the Vedas would be to get the right translations. • Listen to the whole discourse to get more insight into Learning Vedic Literature. • Video Timeline • 0:37 In your religious journey where does learning Vedas come into play • 1:35 What are the Vedas • 4:39 Bhagavad Gita and the Vedas • 6:07 Studying Vedas • 7:13 What are Upanishads • 8:48 What are Puranas • 11:14 How to study the Vedas • 12:11 How many years would it take to study the Vedas • Intro and outro animation: Sushree Svadha Om • Piano music: Adi Sharma • If you enjoyed this video and would like to explore the topic more, here's a blog post by Om Swami: • Scriptures are supposed to be an aid to your discovery and not the discovery itself.
