Gothic was a style that emerged at the beginning of the 12th century, as a continuation of the Romanesque style and being influenced by Byzantine and Islamic art, it produced a great variety of works, from architecture, with its search for light, and each ever higher vaults, arches, towers, and spiers, ending in buttresses and flying buttresses, both in large cathedrals and palaces and town halls. At the same time, the sculptures and paintings conveyed spirituality, sentimental and natural aspects, and had educational, decorative, or documentary purposes. This movement spread throughout Europe and lasted until the mid-1400s, managing to reappear 4 centuries later. Starting in France, it quickly passed through England, continuing with a more refined style such as Chartres or Reims, then with something even more decorative and radiant, reaching Germany, Italy, Spain, and Central Europe, and a last period with a supreme use of the stained glass window and wavy arches as in Sainte-Chapelle. In those great cathedrals, they have polychrome statues as decoration, which begin to have a greater expressiveness. And for its part, painting has a didactic function, appearing in frescoes, panels, and illuminated manuscripts. • #ArtShorts #Gothic #Chartres #Reims #Painting #Sculpture #Architecture
