The reredos which sits behind the altar rail in St James’s Church is the work of seventeenth century sculptor, Grinling Gibbons, one of Britain’s most famous and renowned woodcarvers. It was given to St James’s by Sir Robert Geyre, a courtier and parishioner who lived nearby on Jermyn Street and who was a collector of Gibbons’ work. • The reredos is a superlative example of the naturalistic style Gibbons pioneered, featuring the typical trademarks of his Baroque sculptures: cascades of flowers, fruit, leaves, shells and birds that captivate the viewer with their intricacy. • #GrinlingGibbons #historyofart #woodcarving #christopherwren #churchhistory #HistoricChurch • Subscribe to our YouTube channel and never miss a video: / @stjamesschurchpiccadilly • Follow us on Instagram / stjpiccadilly and Facebook / sjpicc • Help us amplify our social outreach work and make St James’s church, courtyard and garden more accessible for all by supporting The Wren Project here: https://www.sjp.org.uk/ways-to-donate... • Hear about what’s on and get the latest news from St James’s by signing up to our newsletter: https://www.sjp.org.uk/keep-in-touch/ • As a church St James’s seeks to be a welcoming space for people to reflect, create and debate, open to everyone of all faiths and none.
