Are crosses idols? Is it a sin to wear a cross? What does the Bible say? Some Christians cite the 2nd commandment in Exodus 20 and claim that cross symbols are pagan. But this is a failed reading and understanding of the second commandment. • When you read the passage in its entirety, it quickly becomes clear that crosses and other objects become idols when you worship them or bow down unto them. • Do you worship the symbol of the cross? Do you bow down unto it? If so, then the cross is an idol to you. Otherwise, the cross is just a symbol of the Christian faith. • While most people stop mid-sentence at verse 4, reading the context sheds great light on this topic. • Exodus 20:3-5: • 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. • 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: • 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; • Verse 3 sets the context, it is about having no other gods before God. • Verse 4 ends with a : indicating that the sentence is not yet complete. • Verse 5 indicates that bowing down and worship graven images is the issue. So unless you are literally worshiping the cross, then it is not idolatry. • Get some sense, people, and stop being overly religious. Some Christians are more interested in learning about paganism than they are about reading their Bible and understanding it.
