Classification of Salivary Glands

The salivary glands are the compound exocrine glands the ducts of these glands open into the oral cavity. The compound means that there are numerous tubules that join the main duct. • The Salivary glands are classified according to the size and contribution of the total salivary secretion into major and the minor salivary glands. The major salivary glands are paired and includes Parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands. The minor salivary glands are smaller in size and have little contribution to the total amount of saliva secreted each day. The minor salivary glands are labial, buccal, palatal and lingual glands. These glands have short ducts that opens directly on the oral mucosal surface. • The salivary glands are also classified according to the type of secretion into Serous glands, mucous glands and mixed glands. The serous salivary glands are Parotid and the Von Ebner’s glands. The mucous glands are the sublingual glands and all minor salivary glands except the Von Ebner glands.
