One of the really cruddy things about getting a superstar (through trade, draft, or development) is that you end up marginalizing the fun players who play the same position as the superstar. There are countless examples of this happening all around the league; the one closest to my heart is how D.J. Wilson is getting totally held down by Giannis Antetokounmpo. It sucks, but that's how it has to be, if you want the superstar to play to his maximum potential. • In this case, though, I don't even want Kyrie Irving to play at all, because I'd take Spencer Dinwiddie over him 100 times out of 100. Would Irving just disappearing even affect the Nets' winning chances? I'm letting my love of role-players cloud my judgment here, but I don't even see how Irving plays winning basketball, whereas it is clear to see with Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie is the one who can miraculously throw (and sometimes even complete) lobs to the suddenly landbound DeAndre Jordan. Dinwiddie is the one who can shoot shots in the flow of the offense but also get hot and pull out some Curry-range threes if he needs to. Dinwiddie is the one with the best facial hair in the league. I can go on and on, but I won't, because I've got places to be (in front of my computer) and things to do (more highlights for you insatiable highlight fiends). • Dinwiddie's production has been pretty good even with Irving playing, so I don't know why I'm complaining so much. I guess because I know that he's ready to take that next step into being a super fringe All-Star (like D'Angelo Russell was) but there's just not quite enough touches. My solution: once Irving comes back, if he comes back, finagle a trade with the Detroit Pistons: Dinwiddie for Thon Maker. I want to see a career resurgence for Din-Dins in the place where it all started. • All clips property of the NBA.
