This leitmotif is first heard in the first scene of Das Rheingold • The motif consists only of an interval of a minor second down (a semi-tone). It does not appear on its own very much but there are very many motifs which use this interval to evoke ideas of pain or woe, whether these motifs can be said to derive from this one or whether they all use this interval because or its chromaticism is difficult to say, it's probably a bit of both. • Progenitor leitmotifs: • Rheingold: • 8 Rhinegold : Der Ring Des Nibelungen • Related leitmotifs: • None • Subsidiary Leitmotifs: • Renunciation of Love: • 10 Renunciation of Love : Der Ring De... • Love Tragedy: • 22 Love Tragedy : Der Ring Des Nibelu... • Power of the Ring: • 27 Power of the Ring : Der Ring Des N... • Servitude: • 26 Servitude : Der Ring Des Nibelungen • Bliss: • 51 Bliss : Der Ring Des Nibelungen • Fate: • 60 Fate : Der Ring Des Nibelungen • Death: • 62 Annunciation of Death : Der Ring D... • Hagens Call: • 117 Hagen's Call : Der Ring Des Nibel... • Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for fair use for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
