How do you roughen up a smooth concrete surface? Maybe the smooth concrete surface is slippery and needs a little traction; maybe you want to resurface it, or add tile. Whatever the reason for wanting to make smooth concrete rougher, here are a couple methods for getting it done. • If you plan on bonding new concrete to this older concrete surface, that surface cannot be completely smooth or the new concrete will not adhere and this becomes a point of delamination. Commonly with overlay work or patch work, a jackhammer is used to chip the concrete, giving it a more 3-D texture for the new layer to grab onto. This is often used for resurfacing concrete or adding tile. • Acid washing a smooth concrete surface will roughen it as well, in a much less aggressive way than jackhammering. Any time new concrete is going to be bonded to old concrete, it has to be cleaned, and a great way to clean the concrete is with an acid wash. This is typically a mix of 7 parts clean water to 1 part muriatic acid mixed in a plastic sprinkling can for easy application. When smooth concrete is treated with an acid wash, the acid effectively burns away at the cement component in the top layer, leaving it feeling rough and gritty.
