Andrew Erdos' work is pop, sarcastic, and humorous, with a hint of social commentary. He says, I like taking objects that we are comfortable with—like a human's reaction to animals—and exploring how we interact with them. In my work, there is a complex series of relationships happening; I am trying to explore all the possible caveats of an idea. Erdos incorporates sculpture, video, performance, and sound to explore the current clash at the intersection of culture, technology, and nature. • Studying glassblowing at Alfred University, he was exposed to a wide variety of techniques and discovered that, through unique combinations of various materials, he could achieve in reality exactly what he was envisioning. Erdos cites musicians such as Bob Marley and the band Operation Ivy as well as artists Nam June Paik and Thor Bueno as key influences. • Despite coming from an illustrious family of artists, Erdos originally did not want to follow in their footsteps. In 2002, while still in high school, he had the opportunity to study with Stephen Powell at The Studio, and says this experience gave me the confidence to pursue glass as a career. • Immediately following his college studies, he was included in a major group show in Beijing alongside artists such as John Cage and Kiki Smith. It was this event in particular that Erdos defines as the start of his professional career and the moment that he came into his own, yet in retrospect he acknowledges that his childhood was all about art and building installations. • In his November 2012 Residency at The Studio, Erdos created work for his April 2013 solo exhibition at the Claire Oliver Gallery in New York City, continuing work on his series of mirrored, blown glass animals combined with new media elements. • Find out more about residencies at the Studio at: http://www.cmog.org/glassmaking/studi...
