Mr. Ledward Kaapana http://ledkaapana.com/ is touring Northern California and staying with us during his visit. I knew he would enjoy my latest instrument acquisition, a 1949 Martin T-18 Tiple and indeed, he has been making it sing like no other player who's picked it up. • Nanea Ko Maka I Ka Lealea is an old song that Uncle Ray Kane made one of his signature instrumentals, and we played it thinking of that wonderful gentleman. Ledward often reminisces about the enjoyment of touring and playing with Uncle Ray. • Tiple is the name used for a variety of stringed instruments across the Spanish speaking Americas, where it is pronounced teeplay. The CF Martin Company created a variation with 10 metal strings in 4 courses, to be tuned like an `ukulele. In Hawai`i and on the mainland of the US, the name of the instrument is usually pronounced tipple. The courses are (low to high) an octave pair, high low high octave triplet, high low high octave triplet, unison pair. We are tuning to the prewar mainland standard, D6 or A D F# B. This is the modern GCEA tuning raised one whole step and seems to be a common choice for tiple tuning. • With the short scale, octave strings, and uncompensated bridge, the tiple can be challenging to keep and play in tune. It takes a delicate touch and a lot of attention to keep the music flowing while dealing with the challenges, and Ledward has been demonstrating his mastery of the strings. He says that one of his Aunties back in Kalapana had a tiple that she featured at family parties. • The video was assembled from two cameras and a separate audio track. The shot on Ledward's side comes from a Panasonic Lumix GH2, while the one on my side was captured with a Sanyo Xacti HD2000. The audio was recorded using a pair of Schoeps MK4 cardioids in an ORTF array, through an RME UFX interface and into REAPER. The video editing took place in Edius Neo.
