During the Second World War, there were huge networks of concentration camps established within the Third Reich. One of the largest complexes opened by the Nazis was Mauthausen Concentration Camp, and inside of Mauthausen and its subcamps, around 90,000 people died because of the harsh and terrible conditions. Mauthausen was known for being a site of incredibly hard labour, when prisoners were forced to work in the granite quarries around the sites. Inside of these quarries the work was back breaking, and SS guards forced prisoners to work incredibly hard and executed those who struggled to work. • The guards played horrific games with prisoner's lives on Mauthausen's dangerous Stairs of Death, and the regularly pushed prisoners off cliffs. But there was a lack of food given to prisoners and as the war went on they received less calories per day. The US Army liberated Mauthausen, and then brought a number of former members of staff on trial for their crimes at the Mauthausen Trials.
