Sheldon Harnick, who wrote this charming little ditty in 1958, is best known for the popular musical, Fiddler on the Roof . • The rendition that everybody knows is the recording by The Kingston Trio on the 1959 album The Kingston Trio at the Hungry i. They changed the original la la lines to whistling, and most subsequent renditions, such as those of Bud and Travis and Alonzogarbanzo, are basically covers of the Kingston Trio version, including the whistling. Charlotte Rae also sings it on Songs I Taught My Mother (1955). • I decided to go back to the la la s - mainly because I can't whistle. • Lyrics and chords: • D ...............................
