In the last decade of the 19th century, the Mannlicher “Infanterie Repetier-Gewehr Modell 88” was among the most advanced infantry rifles in the world. It’s almost forgotten today, although the impact it had on further weapons development and changes to battlefield tactics is far greater than its modest reputation would suggest. • It was used extensively in the Chilean Civil War, one of the very few glimpses of “modern war” in the two decade period from 1880-1900.
