The country went through 50 long years of spasmodic civil wars. It was only in 2005 that North Sudan and South Sudan signed a cease fire and the fighting finally stopped. It is one of the youngest countries in the world. It was only in 2011 that South Sudan declared itself as an independent nation when it spun-off from the country of Sudan. • 2. The Boma National Park, situated close to the Ethiopian border is a vast expanse of wilderness that is home to wildlife including migratory herds of over a million Mongalla gazelle, white-eared kob, tiang and antelope. • 3. South Sudan is a multilingual country, with over 60 indigenous languages spoken. The official language of the country is English, which was introduced in the region during the colonial era. English and Arabic were the official languages, but after independence only English was retained as an official working language, according to the transitional constitution. • • 4. Juba is the capital of South Sudan. It is located on the White Nile and is the seat and metropolis of Juba County. It is also the capital of Central Equatoria. • • 5. Around 83% of the country’s population lives in circular stick and mud structures called “tukuls”. These rustic cottages generally have no windows are tall and have thatched roofs. • 6. The Sudd is a large swampy area of more than 100,000 sq km fed by the waters of the White Nile that dominates the center of the country. The Sudd is a vast swamp in South Sudan, formed by the White Nile, comprising more than 15% of the country's total area; it is one of the world's largest wetlands. • 7. In 2013, South Sudan was engulfed by civil war when President Kiir fired his entire cabinet and accused Vice-President Riek Machar of instigating a failed coup.
