Malvina Reynolds was a prolific songwriter, who wrote about various socially significant topics, especially the environment. She is said to have written a song every day before breakfast. Many of her songs were sung, and popularised, by Pete Seeger, probably the best known example being Little Boxes . • Malvina co-wrote this one with Alan Greene, and it was popularised by Harry Belafonte, who apparently insisted on some changes before he agreed to record it, in particular the addition of the chorus. In the original song, for example, it was sunsuits and petticoats, rather than dirndls and petticoats. Belafonte argued that you don't wear petticoats with sunsuits. Malvina's response was that she wasn't thinking of wearing; she was thinking of ironing! • Though many other artists recorded it none achieved the success of Belafonte's rendition.
