DWC stands for deep water culture. • Most people look for DWC systems without knowing the method is actually just water culture hydroponics. The addition of the word deep just means the system is at least 8 to 10 inches deep. • How Does a Deep Water Culture System Work? • A plant is suspended in a net cup above the nutrient solution in the reservoir. The reservoir in this case is a bucket. As the root system of the plant grows it relies on dissolved oxygen in the water to survive. • In the system we're building, an air pump (aerator) oxygenates the water. Without this aeration, the nutrient solution (water) would become stagnant and a fully submerged root system would die.
