My Father's Guidance in My Life • My father had planned a traditional career in philosophy or politics for me and took great care to expose me to literary and philosophical influences. • However, around 145 AD, my father claimed to have had a dream in which the god Asclepius appeared and commanded him to send me to study medicine. Guided by this divine instruction, I chose medicine and made significant progress in my studies. • As for my medical education, after receiving a comprehensive education in my youth, I began my training at the age of 16 as a θεραπευτής (therapeutes, or attendant) at the local healing temple, the Asklepeion, for four years. • During this period, I came under the influence of notable figures such as Aeschrion of Pergamon, Stratonicus, and Satyrus. • Asklepieions functioned as spas or sanatoriums where priests helped the sick. Romans frequently visited the temple in Pergamon seeking relief from illness and disease. This place was also a haunt for notable individuals such as the historian Claudius Charax, the orator Aelius Aristides, the sophist Polemo, and the consul Cuspius Rufinus. • My father died in 148 AD, and at the age of 19, I became independently wealthy. Following the advice found in Hippocrates' teachings, I traveled extensively and became acquainted with various schools of thought in medicine, visiting places such as Smyrna (modern-day İzmir), Corinth, Crete, Cilicia (modern-day Çukurova), Cyprus, and finally the great medical school of Alexandria. • In 157 AD, at the age of 28, I returned to Pergamon as the physician to the gladiators of the High Priest of Asia. The High Priest chose me over other physicians because I had eviscerated a monkey and challenged other physicians to repair the damage. When they refused, I performed the surgery myself, earning the High Priest's favor. During the four years I spent there, I learned a great deal about diet, fitness, hygiene, preventive measures, living anatomy, and the treatment of fractures and severe trauma. I referred to the gladiators' wounds as windows into the body. During this period, the number of deaths among gladiators, which was sixty during the time of my predecessor, dropped to only five in my tenure. This success is generally attributed to the care I showed to their wounds. At the same time, I continued my studies in theoretical medicine and philosophy. • Keywords: My Father's Guidance, traditional career, philosophy, politics, literary influences, philosophical influences, 145 AD, dream, god Asclepius, study medicine, divine instruction, significant progress, medical education, comprehensive education, θεραπευτής, therapeutes, attendant, healing temple, Asklepeion, notable figures, Aeschrion of Pergamon, Stratonicus, Satyrus, spas, sanatoriums, priests, Romans, relief from illness, Claudius Charax, Aelius Aristides, Polemo, Cuspius Rufinus, 148 AD, independently wealthy, Hippocrates' teachings, extensive travel, schools of thought, medicine, Smyrna, Corinth, Crete, Cilicia, Cyprus, Alexandria, 157 AD, physician, gladiators, High Priest of Asia, surgery, diet, fitness, hygiene, preventive measures, living anatomy, treatment of fractures, severe trauma, windows into the body, theoretical medicine, philosophy, • Hashtags: #MyFathersGuidance #TraditionalCareer #Philosophy #Politics #LiteraryInfluences #PhilosophicalInfluences #145AD #Dream #GodAsclepius #StudyMedicine #DivineInstruction #MedicalEducation #ComprehensiveEducation #Therapeutes #HealingTemple #Asklepeion #NotableFigures #AeschrionOfPergamon #Stratonicus #Satyrus #Spas #Sanatoriums #Priests #Romans #ReliefFromIllness #ClaudiusCharax #AeliusAristides #Polemo #CuspiusRufinus #148AD #IndependentlyWealthy #HippocratesTeachings #ExtensiveTravel #SchoolsOfThought #Medicine #Smyrna #Corinth #Crete #Cilicia #Cyprus #Alexandria #157AD #Physician #Gladiators #HighPriestOfAsia #Surgery #Diet #Fitness #Hygiene #PreventiveMeasures #LivingAnatomy #TreatmentOfFractures #SevereTrauma #WindowsIntoTheBody #TheoreticalMedicine #Philosophy • web site https://drmustafaakgun.com
