Banned brings together Evelyn Alsultany and Melani McAlister, two American Studies scholars, to consider how the representations of Middle Eastern populations both domestically and abroad influence U.S. policy. In particular, we hope that this event will allow the Brown community to dig deeper into the problematics of new policy, such as the Immigration Ban, in order to advance understanding of the dangers of conflation and visual marking that brown bodies undergo. • Introductions by Nancy Khalek, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Brown University. Discussion moderated by Robert Lee, Associate Professor of American Studies at Brown University. • Speakers: • Evelyn Alsultany is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Associate Professor in the Department of American Culture and Director of Arab and Muslim American Studies at the University of Michigan. • Melani McAlister is Associate Professor of American Studies and International Affairs at the George Washington University. • For more info see: • https://www.brown.edu/academics/race-... • Monday, October 02, 2017 • Brown University
