Over the last 2.5 million years, 50 glacial periods occurred with an average periodicity of 100,000 years. It results a global cooling of 5°C below modern values. However, this cooling can locally reach the crazy value of 30°C below modern temperatures (Greenland, Canada, Scandinavia). • One man proposed a theory to explain the origin of the glacial-interglacial periodicity : Milutin Milankovitch. • He evidenced the role of Earth orbital parameters periodic variations : Orbital eccentricity, axial tilt obliquity and axial tilt precession. • These variations modify the amount of solar energy received on Earth by +/- 50 W/m². • In comparisons, the worst scenario published by the IPCC about future climate change estimate an increasing irradiance by 12 W/m². • The major difference is the looong-term of Milankovitch cycles induced climate change : between 19,000 and 400,000 years. • Please watch in this video the description of these cycles from the last 500,000 years to the next 200,000 years.
