Malcolm Holcombe Two Songs

Malcolm Holcombe is one of a kind, something you can't say about too many artists these days. Raised in Weaverville, North Carolina, Holcombe's put out a string of compelling albums in the last decade and become a much talked about performer in the process. The great writer, Thomas Wolfe, was born in Asheville, not far from Holcombe's birthplace; whereas Wolfe once strode the nocturnal avenues of New York City, intoxicated and bellowing that he wrote 10,000 words today!, Holcombe is more apt to give you ten words, leave you to flesh out his clues with your own imagination. He invites you into his songs that way, tossing broken bits of mirror on the table, so you catch elusive characters in stride, see shadows in the silver cracks. With a voice that carries rust, bent nails and wood smoke in it, Holcombe sings and growls his songs, adding cryptic asides as he sees fit, his presence barely containable on a small stage. He's won battles with substance use, and proved wrong anyone who thought such things were the engines of his character and power. He may have tethered some demons, but Holcombe's spirit remains untamed. He's still got a wild and restless stamp on his soul, and leaves nothing for next time. Included in this video presentation are two of Malcolm's songs, Where Is My Garden and Someone Left Behind. In attempting to capture them in a video slideshow setting, I've taken poetic license in interpreting the songs by how they reach my ear and heart. You just might get your own pictures.
