Inside of the concentration camps, there were many evil SS guards who utilised terror to strike fear into the hearts of the prisoners inside camps such as Bergen-Belsen. But inside of Mauthausen, a notoriously tough camp there were many executions carried out by the guards, and prisoners were expected to be exterminated by hard labour. But there was one part of Mauthausen which became notorious for suffering, exhaustion and horror. The Stairs of Death were 186 steps which led from one of the quarries. • Prisoners were expected to carry blocks of granite which were heavier than their body weight up the steps, and many accidents happened there. Prisoners would drop their blocks of stone and these would break bones, but also they would fall down the stairs causing many prisoners to fall. But there was also a sadistic game the SS guards played near the steps named the 'Parachutists Wall,' in which they would force prisoners to push other prisoners off the cliff, and if they did not do this they would be executed there and then.
